The surprising reason more women are injured in car accidents

On Behalf of | Mar 31, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Any car accident in Michigan can be dangerous, but you might be interested to learn that women are at an increased risk of being injured despite the fact that they tend to be in fewer accidents. What you might be even more surprised to learn is that the higher incidence rate of injury for women isn’t related to physiology, such as being smaller than men.

Why are women more likely to be injured or killed in an accident?

While more men are injured and killed in motor vehicle accidents, women are more likely to be injured or killed in any particular accident because of the types of vehicles that they drive and the types of crashes that they’re involved in.

A recent study was conducted by insurance companies, and in this study, they found that women were more likely to be in cars than in larger vehicles. In fact, about 20% of men were in pickup trucks whereas only 5% of women were in pickup trucks. Additionally, because men are more likely to be in the striking vehicle and women are more likely to be in the vehicle that was hit, women are at a higher risk of injury because the vehicle that is stricken typically is more likely to suffer damage, especially when the vehicle is smaller.

Actions to take after an accident

If you’re ever in an car accident, there are a number of things that you should do, and some of them are related to safety or taking care of the financial aspects of being in an accident. First of all, make sure that you move your vehicle to the side of the road so that another vehicle doesn’t hit your car. Additionally, you should be checked out by a medical professional for any injuries even if you don’t initially feel hurt anywhere. After all this, it’s a good idea to call your insurance company.

Accidents can be scary, but one of the most important things that you can do is ensure that you’re checked out so that you get the care that you need to avoid even more suffering and long-term injury.
